Welcome to Japanese cooking 101 today we Are going to make Korean rice let’s take A look at the ingredients we have half a Pound of beef cut for stew 2 onions 2 Carrots 3 potatoes and a box of Japanese Curry sauce mix well about the curry mix You can find a box like this or Something similar from different brand At Asian food section of most grocery Stores these days we are all for cooking Anything from scratch and hardly use any Pre-made sauce mix in our recipes but When it comes to Japanese curry that’s a Different story without the curry sauce Mix from a box it’s just not the same so If you’re looking for the flavor of Curry that you had in Japan or you have Japanese friend made for you ones just Pick up the box at the store and that’s The most important part of this recipe Please note that some brands may be Spicier or thicker than the others and Also contain more room in a box so you Should refer to the instruction on the Back of the package to determine how Much water you use so let’s start Cooking first we cut vegetables just Randomly cut carrots into bite-sized Pieces it doesn’t really matter how you Cut it We cut a potato into about 8 to 12 Pieces a bit larger than the bite size But again it’s up to you how big you cut It onions we first cut into half and
Then slice it about half an inch thick Now we heat the pot on medium-high heat Ideally a heavy Dutch oven or a thick And large pot to brown the meat saute The vegetables and simmer the sauce All in one pot with about a tablespoon Vegetable oil brown the beef make sure The pot is hot and don’t put too many At once if you put it small so the meat Browns without getting all soggy with Liquids from the meat you don’t need to Heat it through but just until all sides Of Brown when that’s done remove the Meat from the pot for now and start Sauteing the onions using the same pot Saute onions in medium heat stirring Frequently until outside just starts to Brown and onions begin caramelized That’s a very important step because That gives you really sweet flavor of Onions caramelized then add carrots and Potatoes and saute for another few Minutes and then put the meat back in The pot Poor four cups of water and bring it to A boil and skim fat that comes up to the Surface cover and simmer for about 40 Minutes or until the meat and vegetables Are tender now open the lid and it’s Ready to add sauce mix turn the heat off For now and add curry roux the sauce mix To the pot using the wood spoon or Spatula stir it well so the pieces of The mix dissolve into the liquid you
Might break the potatoes and carrots Because they are so soft and onions Might be melted in the sauce but that’s Perfectly fine and it tastes better that Way anyway it started to look like curry And it sure does smell like one too at This point Now turn the heat back on and let it Simmer for another 10 to 15 minutes the Curry will taste good as it is but you Can add some optional seasoning to Deepen the flavor here we’ll add 1 tbsp Ketchup 1 tablespoon Worcester sauce 1 Tablespoon soy sauce and 1 tablespoon Apricot jam you might find it strange to Put some of those condiments in the Curry but trust me it tastes good You can skip all this or just add the Stuff you like for additional flavor and To finish up you may add some curry Powder at the end but again it’s Optional stir it a few more times turn The heat off and it’s already Now we move from heat and pour the curry Over steamed white rice does not look Great with lots of vegetables potatoes And beef smells fantastic too you can Add some Japanese sweet pickles called Fukushima to cake on the side and enjoy Korean rice shi shi
